Summer School Objectives
By completing this summer school, students will:
- Aquaculture Systems & Trends: Understand global trends, the importance of aquaculture, and various systems (extensive, semi-intensive, intensive, IMTA). Learn site selection, infrastructure design, and sustainable management practices.
- Fish Welfare & Disease Prevention: Maintain high fish welfare standards, manage biosafety in cage farming, and implement protocols for spawning, larval rearing, and disease prevention, especially in RAS systems.
- RAS Technology & Design: Understand Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) principles, including water treatment, nutrition, off-flavour mitigation, habitat design, and facility cost analysis.
- Post-Harvest Management: Gain expertise in handling, processing, and preserving aquatic products. Learn cold chain logistics, packaging, and strategies to ensure product quality, safety, and extended shelf life
- By-Product Utilization & Sustainability: Explore innovative extraction methods, waste minimization, resource recovery, and sustainable practices to optimize by-product production and meet industry standards.
- Market Readiness & Product Development: Enhance skills in market preparation, raw material sourcing, and creating new products while gaining hands-on experience in RAS and other aquaculture operations.
